Fishing Season Review Karen Lynn Charters Gloucester, MA
As spring weather is right around the corner, I wanted to reflect on the exciting season Karen Lynn Charters enjoyed! Fishing for Bluefin tuna, Striped Bass, Cod, Haddock and Sharks.
Cod and Haddock Fishing Charters
Charter fishing for cod and haddock started off great in May with lots of action to be had. This will always help get rid of the cabin fever after a long winter! These trips can be fun as multiple people are fishing at once. The excitement of every time you drop your bait to the bottom you never know what you might reel up. With the big bonus being that haddock is one of the tastiest fish New England has to offer!
After a nice day on the water you can walk your fish up to the outdoor bar at the Cape Ann Marina and have them cook it right up for your group. While you enjoy a drink over looking the beautiful Annisquam river! Cod and haddock fishing can be a bit better early spring. But will continue to be good throughout the summer months.

Our world class Bluefin tuna fishing we have here off our Gloucester, Massachusetts has provided some memorable action throughout the season. As usual large amounts of bait as well as humpback, minke and fin back whales showed up off of Gloucester, MA. The Bluefin tuna is here for the same reason, to fatten up on the vast amounts of bait that gather in the area. As offshore structure such as Stellwagen Bank and Jefferey’s ledge create great areas for ocean life to collect.

Sometimes it can be a bit of a waiting game. But if it all comes together it will be a experience you wont soon forget!

Karen Lynn Charters Gloucester, Massachusetts
Excellent 2015 charter fishing season aboard Karen Lynn Charters out of Gloucester, Massachusetts! Great all around Tuna, Striped Bass, Haddock and Shark fishing enjoyed by many new and returning clients.
Cod and Haddock Fishing Charters
We started out bottom fishing for Cod and Haddock on May 1, which always creates a fun atmosphere. The fishing was pretty consistent all through the summer. Most trips we are usually anchored up and dropping down rigs baited with clams. You never know what you be reeling up from the deep which keeps things interesting. Almost always we would run into a few Pollock and Cusk to go along with the Cod and Haddock. We also had many trips with Shark encounters. As your reeling up your fish from the bottom they tend to grab it right off the hook or you getting back just the head. Always creates excitement as we keep our shark rod ready to go. We will set someone up in the stand up fighting gear and toss out a bait. More often than not the shark is still hanging around and will take the bait. Makes for a great battle and a unique experience bringing a large Shark up next to the boat!
Striped Bass Fishing Charters
The Striped Bass showed up pretty good starting in late May early June off of the Gloucester shoreline. They tend to produce fun and exciting action on lighter tackle as they always put up a good fight. They can be very aggressive chasing the live bait and coming right out of the water after it. I always enjoy watching clients battle there first Striped Bass as they are usually hooked on fishing shortly after! Striped Bass fishing charters can be a great way to spend the day out on the water.
Tuna Fishing Charters
The World Class Bluefin Tuna fishery we have off of Gloucester, MA proved to be a fairly productive season. On most days we had a good shot at hooking into a tuna, some slower days here and there of course but overall it was good. Lots of bait in most of the areas we fish which is always a good sign and will keep the tuna hanging around and aggressive to feed. A few different size class tuna were in the mix as we caught fish from a 100lbs up to 900lbs. On one trip we hooked into two 600lb class fish at the same time we got lucky and landed them both which was quite the memory for the lucky charter on board! Fishing charters for Bluefin Tuna out of Gloucester, Massachusetts can be a unique experience in itself hooking and landing one will truly create the memory of a lifetime!

Collin Catches record 54.7# Striped Bass
This big striped bass didn’t slip the hook
By RICHARD GAINES Staff Writer Gloucester Times
Colin MacKenzie is a professional fisherman. So when he hooked up at dawn yesterday a couple miles out past the Dog Bar breakwater, it was with some experience that he said, “I thought I had a tuna.”
Un-uh. MacKenzie would discover to his great pleasure 10 minutes later that, using a live mackerel, he’d hooked and boated a striped bass for the ages.
Back at Winchester’s Fishing Company where it was weighed into an annual contest as the leader by far, MacKenzie learned he had caught a 54-pound bass — so far as Winchester’s knows, the largest bass of the decade, and only the second 50-plus bass in 15 years.
Winchester’s has already weighed in five other fish of more than 35 pounds in a season that seems ready to take its place as the best for fish of a certain size.
By the standard chart of length, age and weight, the MacKenzie bass likely hatched from an egg in 1986, about the time a massive all-points recovery program to save the striped bass from extinction finally took hold.
The recovery has been one of the nation’s singular recovery success stories.
The only other bass of more than 50 pounds in this decade was caught strangely enough just off the Annisquam Yacht Club in August 2005.
Born and raised in Gloucester, MacKenzie, 28, and his mate Chris Coomb were on their way to participate in the Monster Shark tournament in Martha’s Vineyard on MacKenzie’s 43-foot boat when they took some time to catch some mackerel and hoped to land some bluefish to use for bait in the tournament.
The mackerel was swimming in about 20 feet of water about 30 feet from the bottom when the big bass hit.
“He took it and ran; I thought it was a small tuna,” MacKenzie said.
MacKenzie operates Karenlynn Charters. Stripers heavier than 50 pounds are rare anywhere, especially on this side of the inshore waters, and even farther south along Cape Cod, past Montauk on Long Island, N.Y., and down the coast of the mid-Atlantic states, 50-pounders are big news.
For perspective, the world’s record rod-and-reel striper is a 78-pounder caught in 1982 off the Atlantic City, N.J., boardwalk.
