Bluefin Tuna Fishing, Striped Bass, Cod and Haddock Fishing Season Review !

Tuna, Striped Bass, Cod, Haddock, Shark Fishing Gloucester, MA

We enjoyed some great fishing on the Karen Lynn during the season. Starting off in May with excellent ground fishing for Cod and Haddock, many days with great action and bent rods allowing clients to take home some of the tastiest fish the ocean has to offer. On most Cod and Haddock trips we usually had a run in with a shark. Mostly blue sharks but an occasional Porbeagle or Mako shark would show up which can be an excellent fight as well as good table fare, always exciting seeing a big shark swim up behind the boat.

Striped Bass Fishing Gloucester, MA

A great mix of Striped Bass started showing up in late May right behind the mackerel. Creating some fun and exciting action on most trips with great Striped Bass fishing continuing through June and July. With some Monster Striped Bass being landed, some times it takes patience waiting on that big one to come along but it is certainly worth it. Some big Stripers around this season as we landed a few coming close to the 50 pound mark. The coast of Gloucester offers some great Striped Bass Fishing with the chance of catching a true trophy Striped Bass!

Bluefin Tuna Fishing Gloucester, MA

The Blue fin Tuna offered up some great action with the season running into November. We usually had a good shot at them on most days, some true Giants showed up with our biggest being around 900 pounds. Lots of bait and whales around which is always a good thing. High hopes for new season as new groups and different size class tuna should be showing up. Gloucester offers up some of the best Blue Fin Tuna Fishing in the world, truly a memory of a lifetime seeing one of these fish pulled on deck!

Seems like the nice weather has come to stay! We have been enjoying some great trips aboard Karen Lynn Charters out of Gloucester, MA. Cod and Haddock Fishing still continues to be pretty good despite the water warming up. Striped Bass trips have been producing pretty good with some monster Stripers being caught, with one client landed a nice 48 inch close to 50lb monster Striped Bass the other day. Striped Bass fishing charters should continue to improve as more fish show up. The Tuna fishing is still a bit behind due to the cold winter we had, expecting that to continue to get better as time goes on. We enjoyed some great fishing on the Karen Lynn during the 2013 season. Starting off in April with excellent ground fishing for Cod and Haddock, many days with great action and bent rods allowing clients to take home plenty of fresh fish, some of the best New England has to offer. Some days you had to bounce around a bit but we always seemed to find some good action, on most Cod and Haddock trips we usually had a run in with a shark or two as there seemed to be a lot of them around. Mostly blue sharks but an occasional Porbeagle or Mako shark would show up which can be an excellent fight as well as good table fare, always exciting seeing a big shark swim up behind the boat.

The Blue fin Tuna showed up off of Gloucester in June which gave us a chance at catching a few early season Tuna. As the Season went on the tuna started to settle into certain areas but not for long as the bait fish were always on the move. So staying on top of that and making good decisions on any given day would give us our shot at hooking up. With more and more baitfish showing up every year it’s always exciting to see what size and class of fish show up! Looking forward to the new season as new groups and different size class tuna should be showing up off of Gloucester.

Giant Bluefin Tuna Charters Gloucester, MA

Giant Bluefin Tuna fishing charters off of Gloucester, Massachusetts has provided some memorable action throughout the season. As usual large amounts of bait as well as humpback, minke and fin back whales showed up off of Gloucester, MA. The Bluefin tuna is here for the same reason, to fatten up on the vast amounts of bait that gather in the area. As offshore structure such as Stellwagen Bank and Jefferey’s ledge create great areas for ocean life to collect. There is nothing like hooking up to a Giant Bluefin Tuna they truly are the toughest fish in the sea! Many Bluefin Tuna charter groups enjoyed the thrill of landing a Bluefin Tuna. We of course are not always successful but be assured we give it our upmost effort every time we leave the dock!

Striped Bass Fishing Charters Gloucester, MA

Striped Bass Fishing Charters off of Gloucester, MA has been great the past couple weeks. This is such a great time to get out there and enjoy some excellent fishing for Stripers. Whether you are live lining a mackerel or casting your favorite lures, there is a great chance of a trophy Bass lurking below ! Here is 14 year old Jake with a nice 50″ Striped Bass! Not to bad for his first Striper that he has ever caught! Which is both good and bad as shortly after he had landed his monster Striped Bass, he turned to his dad and said ” dad I am not to sure I want to fish in the lake any more “. He now has the bug for the rest of his life I am sure, always a great thing to get a kid out there fishing ! Good luck to all.

Karen Lynn Charters Bluefin Tuna Fishing Report Gloucester,MA !

Another great day on the water as we were back at again yesterday. Once again we would be heading out in the pea soup fog, could not even see the bridge from the slip felt like we were trapped in a bubble the last couple of days. It finally lifted in the afternoon and the sun popped no doubt a mood changer for sure. Marking a decent amount of fish bouncing off the bottom feeding in the tightly packed groups of sand eels, which have not moved off the bottom much at all. Which would explain the lack of whales and birds on the bank once the temp comes up a little they should become more active.

We were quickly on a fish a half hour into fishing which is always a nice thing. Very hard fighting fish once again taking some good initial runs which create that beautiful noise we all live to hear. The fish we landed and released were in the 70 inch to 71 inch class a little smaller than the previous day. Very tough to gauge an accurate measurement while the tuna is in the water and while we are out commercial fishing we want to make sure we get it right.

We practiced a great catch and release method which has been successfully done for years a very exciting method for sure. Once we get the fish boat side which is averaging around a 10 to 20 min fight the tuna still being very green. We lay down a nice smooth tarp to keep the non skid from removing any slime or scales at all, quickly open the tuna door and slide them in. Having a small wet cloth to quickly drop over their eyes and having our large wash down pump fired up. We then drop the cloth which really keeps them calm and quickly insert the wash down hose into the mouth, on the Karen Lynn we have a large wash down hose which runs off the engine which pushes a great deal of water over their gills very important as tuna are ram breathers and must have water running over their gills. We take a very quick and accurate measurement of the fish, not over 73 inches we quickly put the boat in gear and gently push them out the door having each one kick off very healthy a nice feeling, a very neat and exciting practice for sure we seem get better each time we do it.

Fishing continues to be good hopes of more fish moving onto the bank and settling in. The bass have arrived on the bank lots of them as you will see large packs of them streaking on the fish finder. Ocean life continues to improve as both predator and prey will be in full swing very soon. Good luck to all !

Karen Lynn Charters Tuna Fishing Report Gloucester,MA !

Great day on the water today as we put our first commercial keeper on board 75″, as well as catching and releasing three others in the 70″ range. Great start to the season as it is only June 2, I hope it keeps up. This is our class of fish returning in the 70″ range and they will certaintly be tackle testers especially in June when they are lean and mean pulling 35 to 40lbs of drag on the intial run pretty fast. Good reports up north as well as down south of smaller class fish showing up as well always great to hopefully see the cycle starting over! Make sure your gear is tip top if your are planning to tackle these fish on light and spinning gear as they will put you and your tackle to the test.
