What To Expect
Striped Bass Fishing- Inshore
Striped Bass fishing charters Gloucester, MA are a popular and exciting trip. We tend to fish with lighter rod and reels to create a great battle with the Striped Bass. In the morning on the way out we will stop to jig for our live bait usually being mackerel. We then tend to fish with live bait as well as chumming whether it be drifting or on anchor depending on the day’s condition. It can be quite exciting seeing a Striped Bass chase your mackerel clear out oft he water! Some trips we may have a few Bluefin tuna come by the boat as the chum may attract them. We tend to always have a tuna rod ready to go just in case.
Bluefin Tuna Charters-Offshore
Bluefin Tuna charters on the Karen Lynn are a great specialty of Captain Collin MacKenzie. He might be one of the younger captains among the fleet but he has been successful for quite some time. Bluefin tuna trips are offshore and can vary from 5 to 25 miles offshore. Most trips out of Gloucester, MA are short boat rides usually averaging around a hour or so to the fishing grounds. This is big game fishing at its finest and we make sure all of our gear is up to date and in meticulous working condition. First thing we will do is fish for our live bait as Bluefin tuna find it hard to resist a nice fresh live bait. Having good live bait is always helpful to trick a giant Bluefin tuna into biting!
We will then anchor the boat on some structure where the tuna are most likely to come by looking for food. On some days we might drift given the conditions on a given day. We then set out our baits and patiently wait for a hungry tuna to come swimming by. Hooking into a Bluefin tuna is quite the experience, the rod and reel will be peeling out line and lots of controlled chaos will begin. Being one of if not the toughest fish in the ocean you are in for quite a battle. Landing a Bluefin tuna on a Gloucester fishing charter is truly a memory you will not soon forget!
Cod and Haddock Charters-Inshore-Offshore
Cod and Haddock charters are what most call traditional deep sea fishing. These trips can range anywhere from 5 miles to 20 miles offshore. We can also find pretty good cod and haddock fishing inshore when the conditions are right. These trips can be lots of fun with groups all fishing at the same time. We are usually anchored up in a specific area with good structure be it Stellwagen Bank or Jeffries ledge to name a couple.
We are usually fishing in depths of 100 feet to 250 feet of water. Our bait of choice is most likely clams which will be set up on a bait rig and dropped to the bottom. Then you just sit back and wait for a nice tug and the you will set the hook. Always interesting reeling your line up as you never know what it could be as we have many different species living on the bottom of the ocean here in New England.
We also tend to encounter shark’s on many off of Cod and Haddock trips. As they are very opportunistic and will try and steal your catch as it is being reeled up. In that instance we always have a shark rod at the ready to toss out there. The same goes for Bluefin tuna as we are usually fishing pretty close to the same areas as we fish for the Bluefin tuna. All and all these are fun trips and you can hopefully expect to go home with some of the best eating fish the ocean has to offer!
Shark Fishing Charters-Offshore
Gloucester charter fishing for sharks can be very exciting as it is a shark and we all know what that entails! Blue sharks are the most prevalent shark specie in our New England water’s. With Mako sharks, Porbeagle sharks and Thresher sharks being the other species we come across. For sharks we are usually heading about 15 to 25 miles offshore to either Stellwagen Bank, Jeffries Ledge or Tillie’s Bank. We will then drift while laying down a heavy stream of chum hoping to entice any sharks in the area. We have great shark rod and reel set up’s that will make for a great and exciting battle when we hook into a shark. Often times we can fish for Cod and Haddock and even Tuna while we are out pursuing sharks!
